Tanzania's early-growth SME ecosystem: market landscape and capital access assessment

ThirdWay Partners, in partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, has completed a market landscape assessment of Tanzania's early-growth SME ecosystem, with a focus on access to early- and growth-stage capital.

Tanzania's startup base is expanding rapidly, growing 23% between 2023 and 2024 to over 1,000 enterprises, yet the country still captures less than 1% of Africa's startup capital. Deal activity has grown six-fold since 2020, but over 80% of transactions remain below US$250k – leaving a structural gap in the US$250k–US$2mn range where companies struggle to transition from early stage to scale.

The report maps the ecosystem's structure, funding instruments, sector concentration and regulatory environment, and sets out the case for a market-tested blended finance vehicle designed to close this gap and crowd in private capital.
